Red Flags & Consent · L1 · Understanding no

Hard to refuse isn't a yes

After book club, you and Jordan walk to the bus stop together. Jordan doesn't talk much and smiles and nods at everything you say. A friend once told you: "With shy people who can't really say no, just take their hand. They won't mind."

What do you make of your friend's advice?

Pick one answer

Lesson notes

A summary of this lesson to come back to. To make it stick, work through the steps above.

By the end you'll be able to

Refute the idea that you can touch first when someone seems unconfident, and replace it with a clear invitation and a clear yes before any contact.

Key ideas

  • Confidence doesn't decide touch
  • Inviting in words

You only see the surface

What you see: smiling and nodding, few words, "anything's fine." Underneath could be not knowing you well yet, worrying about an awkward moment, or not knowing how to say no. You can't tell which one it is, so none of these can count as permission to touch.

Invite with words

If you want to get closer, put what you want to do into a question they can turn down, then pause and wait for the answer. A yes and a reached-out hand is a clear yes. A smile, no answer, or not pulling away isn't one yet.

Harder to refuse, wider door

If someone has told you "I take a while to warm up" or "I'm bad at saying no," that's not a green light. It's a reminder to make the no option clearer and easier in your invitation. For example: "If you don't want to, just say so. Hanging out and talking is great too."

Take these with you

  • ✓How easy it is to refuse and whether someone consents are two separate things. Shy, easygoing or nodding isn't permission to touch.
  • ✓To get closer, ask with a specific question they can turn down, and move only after a clear yes.
  • ✓The harder it is for someone to say no, the clearer and easier you make the no option.

This week's mission

This week, before any physical contact (hugging friends counts), ask "Is that okay?" and take whatever answer they give as a good answer.
