Read Him Clearly · L1 · Is he just bored?

Hot and cold

Last week he texted every day and said you understand him better than anyone. This week he's left you on read. You keep telling yourself it's fine while checking your phone every ten minutes. When he finally replies, "So busy lately, miss you," your whole body relaxes.

This cycle has happened several times now. Why is it getting harder to let him go?

A summary of this lesson to come back to. To make it stick, work through the steps above.

By the end you'll be able to

Tell ordinary mood swings apart from deliberate hot and cold.

Key ideas

  • Intermittent reinforcement
  • Hot-cold cycles

Intermittent reinforcement: the hardest rhythm to quit

If his responses were steady, you'd feel secure. If they stopped completely, you'd slowly let go. The hardest pattern to quit is "sometimes": not knowing when the next burst of warmth will come keeps you waiting. Learning psychology calls this intermittent reinforcement.

Mood swings, or a hot-and-cold cycle?

Everyone gets busy, tired or low. Normal ups and downs come with an explanation, and he comes back without blaming you. A hot-and-cold cycle is different: he pulls back when you get closer, never explains the cold spells, and says you're overthinking when you ask. You don't need to prove it's on purpose. If it keeps repeating, the effect on you is the same.

Take these with you

  • ✓Hot and cold is hard to quit because of intermittent reinforcement, not because the love is deeper.
  • ✓Normal ups and downs come with explanations. A hot-and-cold cycle follows your moves toward him.
  • ✓Name what you see and what you need. If nothing changes, you can leave; you don't have to play it back.

This week's mission

This week, notice once how you feel while waiting for a text, then do one small thing that steadies you.
