Real strength holds, borrowed strength fades

You love your friend Kyle's sense of humor, and lately you've been borrowing his tone and his jokes. At a friend's birthday party, you try his signature line on Chloe, who you just met. She pauses, smiles, and asks: "Is that something you'd normally say?" You freeze. Nothing comes.

Why did that one question stop you cold?

Lesson notes

A summary of this lesson to come back to. To make it stick, work through the steps above.

By the end you'll be able to

Tell imitation, self-hype and outside pep talks apart from letting go of "I need something first before I deserve to feel confident."

Key ideas

  • Real inner strength
  • Borrowed inner strength
  • Conditional confidence

Three kinds of borrowed confidence

Copying someone else's style, chanting slogans at yourself, refueling on pep talks: each can make you look solid for a moment. But they're like a borrowed jacket that slips off the first time someone is cool toward you. Real footing isn't confidence you prop up. It's being able to stand without propping.

Conditional confidence is always one stop away

"Once I make six figures, once I lose twenty pounds, once I have a car, then I'll go for it." Conditions can get someone to sit down with you, but they can't buy you footing. There's always a next condition, so if your confidence hangs on them, you'll always be one step short of deserving it.

Take these with you

  • ✓Imitation, slogans and pep talks hold up for a while, then fall apart when you're questioned or turned down.
  • ✓Conditions can get someone to sit down with you, but your confidence doesn't have to wait for all of them.
  • ✓Real footing isn't having no feelings. It's still being you when they show up.

This week's mission

This week, pick one small thing you've been saving for "once I have it together" and do it once before you do.
