Action, time, effectiveness

I want to wait until I'm ready before I start meeting people
New job first, get in shape, save some money
How long will that take?
No idea. When it feels right, it'll just happen, right?
You

Your college roommate Jake has been saying this for almost a year. Where is he most likely stuck?

Lesson notes

A summary of this lesson to come back to. To make it stick, work through the steps above.

By the end you'll be able to

Multiply the three to check whether you're waiting for a feeling, waiting for conditions, or taking action you can review. Never keep score by intimacy.

Key ideas

  • The results formula
  • Not scoring by intimacy

The results formula: three things multiplied

Progress is roughly action × time × effectiveness. Multiplied, not added: great circumstances but you never speak up, action is zero. Try once and quit, time is zero. Repeat the same move and never review it, effectiveness is zero. Any zero makes the whole thing zero.

Waiting, or doing?

Waiting for the right feeling, the right conditions or the perfect moment all feel like getting ready, but action stays at zero. Reviewable action is small: speak up once this week, write down one thing when you get home, adjust one bit next time.

Don't keep score with intimacy

Some people measure progress by how many numbers they got or how many people they hooked up with. That turns people into points and makes it easier to ignore what they want. A healthy log tracks whether she was at ease, whether you stopped when she wanted to stop, and what you learned.

Take these with you

  • ✓Results are roughly action × time × effectiveness. Any zero makes the whole thing zero.
  • ✓Waiting for a feeling or for conditions feels like preparing, but action stays at zero.
  • ✓Track whether she was at ease and whether you respected her choice, not intimacy counts.

This week's mission

This week, take one reviewable action: speak up once, then write down one thing you want to adjust next time.
