Getting them home safe

You've had a few drinks on a date, and they're a bit drunk, talking slowly. You get a ride and go with them to their building. They get out, turn around and say, "Thanks for getting me home..."

You're at their door. What do you do now?

Lesson notes

A summary of this lesson to come back to. To make it stick, work through the steps above.

By the end you'll be able to

Practice making sure someone who's had too much leaves safely.

Key ideas

  • Looking out for safety

Two ways to get someone home

When someone has had too much, the safest place is their own home or next to someone they trust. Taking them back to your place, or somewhere to "rest for a bit", puts them somewhere much harder to leave.

Who decides what

If they're still clear-headed and say, "I'll get home on my own," respect that. You can help call a ride and ask them to text when they're home, but don't insist on tagging along. Caring isn't insisting.

Take these with you

  • ✓Getting someone home means they get home safely, and then you leave.
  • ✓When someone's had too much, the safest place is their own home or with people they trust.
  • ✓If you see someone leading a drunk friend away, you can step in and keep your friend in a safe plan.

This week's mission

This week, set an emergency contact in your phone, and agree with that person that you can call each other after a night of drinking.
