Where pickup artistry came from

In the US in the 1980s and 90s, many socially anxious men wanted to get past the fear of approaching women and started meeting up and trading tips online. That need got turned into paid courses, some mixed in NLP claims, and media hype later made it an industry. A self-help idea slowly became scripts for getting around someone's judgment.

NLP sounds like science. It isn't.

NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) is a set of claims from the 1970s that certain language patterns and gestures can rewire how other people react. Decades of research reviews have found almost no evidence for its core claims. Having "neuro" in the name doesn't make it neuroscience.

What's hiding under the "anchor"

On the surface it's just a gesture or a tone of voice. Underneath is a decision: she won't know, and she won't get to choose. If attraction is "installed", what she likes isn't you. It's a trick she never agreed to.

Take these with you

  • ✓PUA started from wanting to get past social anxiety. It went wrong when manipulation got packaged as skill.
  • ✓NLP and "anchoring" lack evidence for their core claims, and they start from getting around someone's judgment.
  • ✓To judge any method, ask: if she knew what you were doing, would she be okay with it?

This week's mission

This week, whenever you see a promise to "make her like you", check it once with: would she be okay if she knew?
