Redefine success

Board game night at a friend's place. You end up on a team with Maya, who you just met. You lose three rounds in a row, laugh the whole time, then talk for twenty minutes about the pour-over coffee she's learning to make. When the night wraps up, she heads out with her friends before you two swap numbers. On the walk to the train, one thought is stuck in your head: what a waste of a night.

Look at it again by your own standard. What was this evening?

Lesson notes

A summary of this lesson to come back to. To make it stick, work through the steps above.

By the end you'll be able to

Change the goal from "get her number" to "have a real conversation."

Key ideas

  • Time spent showing up
  • Attraction as an asset

Put success in your own hands

Starting a conversation, really listening, sharing yourself: those are yours to do. Whether she swaps numbers or wants to meet again is her call. Define success by her half and you'll spend every night waiting for a verdict.

Build up your time on the field

This isn't screen time. It's the time you actually spend in real social settings, going back and forth with people. It doesn't care about results, only whether you showed up. Numbers come and go, but time on the field only adds up.

Attraction is an asset; results are just interest

Every real conversation leaves something you can't see: a more relaxed you, more stories to share, a better ear for people. None of it resets to zero after one no, and you bring all of it to the next person you meet.

Take these with you

  • ✓Put success in what you can do: speak up, be present, have a real exchange.
  • ✓Whether she shares her number is her choice, not a score of who you are.
  • ✓Every real conversation adds up. One result doesn't reset it to zero.

This week's mission

This week, have one genuine five-minute conversation, then write down only what you did and one good moment.
