Raised to doubt yourself

At the office party, a coworker says your workouts are really showing and you've been dressing sharp lately. He invites you to a board game night at his friend's place this weekend: "A few single women will be there." You blurt out: "Me? Nah, I'd just be the background guy."

Where does that knee-jerk answer most likely come from?

Lesson notes

A summary of this lesson to come back to. To make it stick, work through the steps above.

By the end you'll be able to

Understand how schooling and surroundings (the crab-bucket effect) push confidence down, and write down one limiting belief to loosen.

Key ideas

  • The crab-bucket effect
  • Limiting beliefs
  • Inner limits

How one line becomes a belief

You come in second and get asked who came first. You do well and get told not to let it go to your head. Many families say this out of love, hoping you'll do even better. But heard often enough, "I'm not enough yet" becomes the default, and as an adult you dismiss yourself first and stop trying.

Crab mentality

When you start changing, someone around you may ask why you're taking it so seriously. Usually it isn't malice. Your change just makes them uneasy. Being pulled back doesn't mean you're wrong. You don't have to fight back, and you don't have to convince anyone.

Where modesty belongs

Modesty is a good trait: you don't exaggerate and you respect others. But it lives in the middle, where you say plainly what you did. Slide all the way to dismissing yourself, and people can only believe the version you give them.

Take these with you

  • ✓Pushing praise away is often a learned reflex, not who you really are.
  • ✓When people pull you back, it doesn't mean you're wrong. You don't have to fight back or give up.
  • ✓Limiting beliefs loosen with new evidence: add "yet," then run a small experiment.

This week's mission

This week, pick one invitation or chance you'd normally answer with "nah, not me," and say yes to it once.
