Performed confidence

Before the date, you read a lot of "high-value man" advice online: lower your voice, smile less, don't ask questions, make her feel you're hard to get. All night you keep checking your posture and tone. Back home you're too drained to talk, and she sends just one line: "Thanks for today."

What was the biggest problem with this night?

Lesson notes

A summary of this lesson to come back to. To make it stick, work through the steps above.

By the end you'll be able to

Explain how faking it to succeed differs from real confidence. Needing to overpower others to look steady is itself unsteady; what's steady is your own emotions and expression.

Key ideas

  • Performed confidence
  • Instrumental confidence
  • What control really means

Performed confidence

Lowering your voice, playing it cool, talking big: the goal is always "make her like me." This kind of confidence turns you into a tool for getting a result, so it collapses the moment there's an awkward pause or a challenge. The harder the surface works, the more it usually fears being seen through.

Composure means steadying yourself

Real composure is about steadying yourself: getting your thoughts out even when nervous, pulling back when you go off track, disagreeing calmly. If you need to interrupt, belittle or order someone around to look steady, that itself is unsteady.

Take these with you

  • ✓Confidence faked for a result collapses at the first lull or no.
  • ✓Asking when you don't know is the easiest kind of confidence.
  • ✓Composure is about steadying your own feelings and words, not controlling her.

This week's mission

This week, in one conversation, say "I don't really know this, can you tell me more?" about a topic you don't know.
